LEADERSHIP SKILLS:
- Instructs beginners on proper cave attire
- Anticipate food and water needs for trips
- Can read and understand cave maps and descriptions
- Knows locations of: Speleobooks, Schoharie Cabin, Gage Cabin
- Familiar with cave terminology : karst, formations, sump, etc.
- Inform beginners on cave ethics: pix/footprints/time
- Keep track of club gear and ensure itβs return to the E-room
TECHNICAL SKILLS:
- Fitting/maintenance of caving helmets and headlamps
- Cave packs β what goes in them and why
- Knowledge of advantages/disadvantages of various fabrics when wet
- Demonstrate the ability to safely cross varied cave terrain such as:
- muddy/loose slopes, deep pools/streams, small climbs/descents, tight crawls, and exposed areas (those with drops beneath/next to)
- Demonstrate knowledge and ability of how to place and use a webbing hand line if and when necessary
- Operate/repair electric headlamps
- First Aid packs β what goes in them and why
WHAT CAVING LEADERS MUST BRING ON TRIPS:
- Personal caving gear
- Extra lights for group members without/that forgot
- Extra polypro in case someone is cold
- Extra food and water
- Trash bag folded up and stuffed inside of helmet for hypothermia tent
- Group cave pack, packed and inspected by leader
- Water bottle(s)
- First Aid kit
- Extra lamp
- Extra batteries
WHAT INDIVIDUALS MUST BRING ON CAVING TRIPS:
- Helmet
- Headlamps(2)
- Small flashlight
- extra batteries
- hange of clothesANDshoes
- Trash bag for muddy clothes
- Polypro underlayers,NO COTTONlayers
- Gas money
- Food and water to snack on
