ROCK CLIMBING
- Helmet fitting and use/inspection
- Proper shoe sizing for self and beginners
- Rope knowledge: dynamic vs. static, “toperope only”
- Use belay devices and calls, and teach same to beginners
- Use rappel devices and teach same to beginners
- Setup toprope using: webbing, static line, nuts, cams
- Knots: figure-8, figure-8 follow through, bowline, water, Prussik, stopper knot/fisherman’s, double/triple fisherman’s, mule knot
- Know how to escape a belay via mule knot/Prussik combo
- Rope: coil, flake, inspection, proper storage, washing
LEADERSHIP REQUIREMENTS FOR LEAD ROCK CLIMBING
All skills required for Basic Rock Climbing Leadership, plus:
- Setting up belay stations on pitches
- Proper placement of protection
- Use of slings to minimize friction, abrasion, rope drag
- How to escape belay and attend partner
- Reading a topo
- Judging conditions
